Situated a few miles from downtown Stowe, on a scenic dirt road, well known for its historic covered bridge, Black Metal House sits lightly at the height of the land.

 

Nicknamed "Project Rad” and "Scandinavian Black Metal House”, this net-zero home was built for a young family seeking an efficient and healthy residence. The exterior boasts complimenting features of black metal, Shou Sugi Ban local wood siding, and board formed concrete walls. 

 

A locally milled ash themed interior draws disparity to the dark exterior. The light and warm characteristics in the ceiling, door slabs, window sills, kitchen cabinets and trim details highlight one of Vermont’s prized (and threatened) species. Plaster walls accent the double height space in the communal areas giving a textural variance.

 

Corner windows throughout allow views both near and far and maximum natural light in these spaces. Custom crafted cabinetry is a feature in most rooms including the library, mudroom, master closet, bathrooms, kitchen and home office. 

 

The family was involved in the process for the duration of the project, even providing music playlists to keep the crew energized and moving in the cold winter months of framing.

 

It is a special place to grow up, as well as to age in place.
