Butternut

Waitsfield, VT

This PHIUS pre-certified Passive house was built on the banks of the Mad River. The one bedroom, one bathroom, 942sqft studio and 620sqft garage were built to compliment the existing 792sqft home that was already on the property.

This Scandinavian-inspired project highlights include R-76 dense pack ceilings, R-42 walls, insulated R-48 sub slab insulation and polished concrete floors. The sheathing layer is located in the middle of the wall cavity with dense pack interior walls, and rockwool exterior walls. It is one of the tightest homes Efficiency Vermont has ever tested.

The home has great solar exposure with large expanses of southern glazing with triple glazed European tilt and turn windows to harvest the sunlight, and abundant winter sun over the Mad River. Glazing is extremely limited on the north side of the studio to maximize privacy from passing cars.

Local pine siding with a diagonal rainscreen provides a durable and beautiful facade which is mixed with standing seam and sheet metal siding.

A solar array was added to the south facing garage roof that couples with two Tesla batteries to provide backup power. This solar array makes all the buildings on the property generate more power than they consume.

The studio and garage are sure to allow the owners a great place to spend their time throughout their active retirement
